F. Challenging your belief systems

Post by Admin on Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:18 am

In this module we get into challenging belief systems. In module two we continue on with it but for now I'd like to discuss your belief systems here.

After you have read the section about Belief Systems in module one, what did you think? We all adopt our beliefs from authority figures such as our parents, teachers, religious leaders, peers and so on. But do you know how to determine whether those beliefs you have serve you well or if they are truly YOUR beliefs? You'll remember I talked about challenging those beliefs by asking yourself one question.

So if we adopt our beliefs, and it's usually when we are young, those beliefs will stay with us until we begin to challenge them. We could think the Earth is flat if someone told us that and we had no way to prove it otherwise right? Yeah, sure we would. And you would go on believing that thought until someone told you the Earth was round.

Same thing with your personal beliefs about yourself. What are your beliefs about yourself? Do you think you are brilliant? Do you think you are ugly? If no two people on this Earth were created the same why do you supposed that is? And who is to say what is beautiful and ugly; a friend, old flame, a parent or you?

Let's discuss beliefs here!

This message is from a person who took my survey on the homepage of my website. The question she answered is: What is stopping you from starting a healing program for binge eating disorder? Her reply is below. I wanted to include her comments here (anonymously of course) because these are her beliefs. You can see that her belief system is dictating whether she gets help or not. She doesn't think she can live without this disorder. She hasn't found the help she needs just yet...perhaps she will join the program?????!!!!!!

"I'm trying self help and affirmations.
But I don't think I can do this on my own
.
I need some real help. I just don't know what else to do.... I don't know how
I would cope without turning to food for that relief. It almost like I'm in a
trance after a binge! But after that wears off, I'm left in my unstable emotional
state. The part that really pisses me off is that I just lost 25 lbs. And now
15 of that has crept back on! Deep down I know that my weight isn't really the
issue, it's only a symptom. I guess another thing that is stopping me is the $...
And I'm really scared not to have my coping mechanism. If I'm not thinking about
food or bingeing, what would I be doing? I'm depressed and have social anxiety
problems too!
I'll stop now..... "
