C. Stages of Change
In module one, page 28, I talk about the Stages of Change that we need to go through in order for change to be effective. Let's talk more about that here.
Stage 1 - Precontemplation (haven't we all spent a lot of time in this stage!) is where we are not intending to take action in the near future. This is where you would have been for a long time as you were in the throws of your eating disorder. I stayed in this stage for years! It wasn't until a year after my daughter Jessica was born that I had finally decided I wanted to get help.
Stage 2 - Contemplation is the stage where we are thinking about making a change. This would have been when you were using the internet to search for resources and options for healing. This is the stage where it all begins! Module one and two are all about contemplation.
Stage 3 - Preparation is the stage the first module of the program deals with and is about getting ready to take action. In this stage we begin by getting the mind thinking about what is to come, what happened in the past, and how we feel about ourselves and our beliefs. We get the mind to challenge old beliefs that aren't good for us. We are not taking any action just yet becasue this is the preparation stage and a very important one. Spending enough time in this stage is important so that there is no resistance once we get to the action stage. Module Three is all about preparation.
Stage 4 - Action is the stage where we begin to make actual changes in our routines. But these changes are so simplistic and slow that you hardly otice them! And as I mention in the program, I will never tell you to STOP bingeing. That is not how it is done. Module Four is when we get to the action stage. We set goals, we work on learning a little about nutrition and how food affects our bodies and we do a lot of evaluating our goals. We spend 3 weeks in this stage taking it very slow and making sure our goals are SMART. (specific, measurable, attainabe, realistic and time managed). I really love the way we set goals in this module.
Stage 5 - Maintenance is the stage where we work toward preventing relapse. Module 5 is all about maintenance, relapse and celebration.
In Maintenance we make tiny adjustments to our goals and we keep moving forward.
Stage 6 - Relapse is the stage we all hope to skip over! But it can happen and I give you some extra tools in Module Five to combat the relapse stage. We work on assertiveness training and coping skills.
Stage 7 - Celebration is the final stage to the model of change. We have gone through 12 weeks to get to this stage and we have done so delibertalye and slowly. It's time to celebrate, be gratful for all that we have gone through and all that we have in our lives and to be proud of the journey we have chosen to take. I know how magnificent this is and I hope to celebrate with you.
So that is an overview of the stages of change. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think there should be more or less time spend on a certain topic or are you comfortable with the pace of the program? Your comments are always welcome!!!!!
