D. Perfectionism
This is one of my favorite topic because it hits very close to home for me! My parents are both very big perfectionists and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! It's important to know that if you also have controlling, perfectionist parents or a spouse, that they may be that way because it is what they learned growing up. I learned to be a perfectionist from my mom and dad.
My brothers are also the same as me. It can be pretty ugly when you keep feeling like you have to be someone that you are not. I felt like everything I did needed to be perfect in order to pass my dad's standards or he wouldn't think highly of me. Now if you take that belief (see why we challenge our belief systems
) and multiply that by 40 years that is alot of unnecessary stress! I also realized that I don't need anyone else's approval of except my own. And you know what? "I approve of myself"!!!!! Keep using that affirmation every day. It works!
I learned how wonderful it felt to not feel like I had to be perfect for my dad but rather how I viewed my own actions, decisions and dealings. As you go through this section in the program, please spend some time on this. I think a lot of feel this way. We are trying to be something in someone else's eyes but it doesn't have to be that way. Question your belief systems to make sure you are being the person that YOU want to be. Do it for yourself only.
Who else falls into this category and what are your thoughts about it?
