F. Purging
Did you know that purging is not just vomiting? I used to think that it was until I learned otherwise. Purging includes any way, shape or form of "getting rid of" food. That means excessive exercising, laxatives and diuretics are on the list. When you purge you are telling your body that you intend to starve it or dehydrate it or work it until it is beaten. We can't see the damage we are doing because it is all we know how to do when we are hurting.
You read about the girl in the program that purged all the time and her parents found out about it. By telling her that they were "disappointed" in her made her hurt grow bigger and her self-esteem grow smaller. Sometimes it is the outside influences that hurt us and we don't feel like we can get away from it. For some of us, we can't because we may live with the person who is making us have bad feelings. Remember she felt as though she needed to be perfect all the time and that other people expected her to be perfect as well? She finally came to realize that all she wanted was to be accepted and loved unconditionally. Isn't that what most of us want?
But let me say that you will first need to find acceptance within you and love yourself unconditionally before anyone else will. You must make your own world be only about you.
Go to your safe place that you created in Module one and stay there for a few minutes thinking this: The only person who needs to accept me right now is me. No one will walk this path that I am on except me. It is only mine. Other people will come and go and stay in my life as I choose but they are not on my path. They are on their own journey. I love and accept myself and walk the path with my mind, body, and spirit as one to guide me."
If you need help setting goals in order to reduce purging, you can post them here or send me a private email to info@nadineann.com. I'd be happy to help you st up those goals. Don't just quit cold turkey when it comes to purging. You could do more damage to your body that way. Reduce your purging slowly using the 4 day goals we talked about in the module. LEt me know if you need help.
