H. Coping Skills
This section is huge! Everyone should take coping skills 101! It should be mandatory in school to teach people how to cope with life. They teach us how to add, subtract, read and write but they could do a better job teaching assertiveness training and coping skills!
So, remember the three keyword phrase: I can...find a solution, I am...okay, and I have...support.
I think the coping skills in this section are great if you have a stressful situation coming up that you can prepare for. It helps to release some anxiety. You can have some pre-made responses in your mind such as "I'm going to be okay."
But what happens if you don't have time to prepare? Try using your deep breathing skills. Take a nice deep breath and exhale slowly when faced with a challenging situation. Remember to STOP the thought process immediately. Look for facts, not feels and respond SLOWLY. Take your time. I think that's the biggest reason we flip out and feel like we can’t handle a situation. We feel like we have to give an answer right away, without having the time to really focus on it, but in fact, taking a few extra seconds to relax and re-group is perfectly fine. You could even say to someone, "Let me think about this for a moment..." and that is perfectly acceptable. Take your time.
